The Gettysburg Address<\/h2>\n
Four<\/span> score<\/span> and seven years ago our<\/span> fat<\/span>hers<\/span> brought forth on<\/span> this<\/span> continent,<\/span> a new<\/span> nation, conceived<\/span> in<\/span> Liberty,<\/span> and<\/span> dedicated<\/span> to the<\/span> proposition<\/span> that all men are<\/span> created equal.<\/span><\/p>\n
Now we are<\/span> engaged<\/span> in a great<\/span> civil<\/span> war,<\/span> testing<\/span> whether that<\/span> nation,<\/span> or any<\/span> nation<\/span> so<\/span> conceived<\/span> and so<\/span> dedicated,<\/span> can<\/span> long<\/span> endure.<\/span> We are<\/span> met<\/span> on a great battle-field of that war. We have come to<\/span> dedicate<\/span> a<\/span> portion<\/span> of that field, as a<\/span> final<\/span> resting<\/span> place<\/span> for those who here<\/span> gave their<\/span> lives that that<\/span> nation<\/span> might live. It is altogether fitting and<\/span> proper<\/span> that we should<\/span> do<\/span> this.<\/span><\/p>\n
But, in a<\/span> larger sense,<\/span> we<\/span> can not<\/span> dedicate<\/span> \u2014 we<\/span> can not<\/span> consecrate<\/span> \u2014 we<\/span> can not<\/span> hallow<\/span> \u2014 this<\/span> ground. The<\/span> brave<\/span> men, living and dead, who<\/span> struggled here, have<\/span> consecrated<\/span> it, far above our<\/span> poor power<\/span> to<\/span> add<\/span> or<\/span> detract.<\/span> The world will little<\/span> note,<\/span> nor<\/span> long<\/span> remember<\/span> what we say here, but it<\/span> can<\/span> never forget what<\/span> they<\/span> did here. It is for<\/span> us<\/span> the living, rather, to be<\/span> dedicated<\/span> here to the<\/span> unfinished<\/span> work which<\/span> they<\/span> who fought here have thus far so<\/span> nobly advanced.<\/span> It is rather for<\/span> us<\/span> to be here<\/span> dedicated<\/span> to the great<\/span> task remaining<\/span> before<\/span> us<\/span> \u2014 that from these<\/span> honored<\/span> dead we<\/span> take<\/span> increased devotion<\/span> to that<\/span> cause<\/span> for which<\/span> they gave<\/span> the last full<\/span> measure<\/span> of<\/span> devotion<\/span> \u2014 that we here highly<\/span> resolve<\/span> that these dead shall<\/span> not<\/span> have died in<\/span> vain<\/span> \u2014 that<\/span> this<\/span> nation,<\/span> under God, shall have a new<\/span> birth<\/span> of freedom<\/span> \u2014 and that<\/span> government<\/span> of the<\/span> people,<\/span> by the<\/span> people,<\/span> for the<\/span> people,<\/span> shall<\/span> not perish<\/span> from the earth.<\/span><\/p>\n

(1) Everyone<\/span> charged<\/span> with a<\/span> penal<\/span> of<\/span>fence<\/span> has the right to be<\/span> presumed innocent<\/span> until<\/span> proved<\/span> guilty<\/span> according<\/span> to<\/span> law<\/span> in a<\/span> public trial<\/span> at which he has had all the<\/span> guarantees necessary<\/span> for his<\/span> defence.<\/span><\/p>\n
(2) No one shall be held guilty of any<\/span> penal<\/span> of<\/span>fence<\/span> on<\/span> account<\/span> of any<\/span> act<\/span> or<\/span> omission<\/span> which did<\/span> not<\/span> constitute<\/span> a<\/span> penal<\/span> of<\/span>fence,<\/span> under<\/span> national<\/span> or<\/span> international<\/span> law,<\/span> at the time when it was<\/span> committed.<\/span> Nor<\/span> shall a heavier<\/span> penalty<\/span> be<\/span> imposed<\/span> than the one that was<\/span> applicable<\/span> at the time the<\/span> penal<\/span> of<\/span>fence<\/span> was<\/span> committed.<\/span><\/p>\n

No one shall be<\/span> subjected<\/span> to<\/span> arbitrary<\/span> interference<\/span> with his<\/span> privacy, family,<\/span> home or<\/span> correspondence,<\/span> nor<\/span> to<\/span> attacks<\/span> upon his<\/span> honour<\/span> and<\/span> reputation.<\/span> Everyone has the right to the<\/span> protection<\/span> of the<\/span> law<\/span> against such<\/span> interference<\/span> or<\/span> attacks.<\/span><\/p>\n

(1) Everyone has the right to freedom of<\/span> movement<\/span> and<\/span> residence<\/span> within the<\/span> borders<\/span> of each<\/span> state.<\/span><\/p>\n
(2) Everyone has the right to leave any<\/span> country,<\/span> including<\/span> his own, and to<\/span> return<\/span> to his<\/span> country.<\/span><\/p>\n

(1) Everyone has the right to seek and to<\/span> enjoy<\/span> in other<\/span> countries<\/span> asylum<\/span> from<\/span> persecution.<\/span><\/p>\n

A Structure for Deoxyribose Nucleic Acid<\/h2>\n

We wish to<\/span> suggest<\/span> a<\/span> structure<\/span> for the salt of<\/span> deoxyribose<\/span> nucleic acid<\/span> (D.N.A.). This<\/span> structure<\/span> has<\/span> novel features<\/span> which are of<\/span> considerable<\/span> biological<\/span> interest.<\/span><\/p>\n
A<\/span> structure<\/span> for<\/span> nucleic acid<\/span> has already been<\/span> proposed<\/span> by<\/span> Pauling and Corey1.<\/span> They<\/span> kindly made<\/span> their<\/span> manuscript available<\/span> to<\/span> us<\/span> in<\/span> advance<\/span> of<\/span> publication.<\/span> Their<\/span> model consists<\/span> of three<\/span> inter<\/span>twined<\/span> chains,<\/span> with the<\/span> phosphates<\/span> near the<\/span> fibre<\/span> axis,<\/span> and the<\/span> bases<\/span> on the outside. In our<\/span> opinion,<\/span> this<\/span> structure<\/span> is<\/span> unsatisfactory for two<\/span> reasons:<\/span><\/p>\n
(1) We believe that the<\/span> material<\/span> which gives the<\/span> X-ray diagrams<\/span> is the salt,<\/span> not<\/span> the free<\/span> acid.<\/span> Without the<\/span> acidic hydrogen<\/span> atoms<\/span> it is<\/span> not clear<\/span> what<\/span> forces<\/span> would hold the<\/span> structure<\/span> together,<\/span> especially<\/span> as the<\/span> negatively charged phosphates<\/span> near the<\/span> axis<\/span> will<\/span> repel<\/span> each other.<\/span><\/p>\n
(2) Some of the van<\/span> der<\/span> Waals distances appear<\/span> to be too small.<\/span><\/p>\n
Another<\/span> three<\/span>-chain<\/span> structure<\/span> has also been<\/span> suggested<\/span> by<\/span> Fraser (in the<\/span> press).<\/span> In his<\/span> model<\/span> the<\/span> phosphates<\/span> are on the outside and the<\/span> bases<\/span> on the inside,<\/span> linked<\/span> together by<\/span> hydrogen<\/span> bonds.<\/span> This<\/span> structure<\/span> as<\/span> described<\/span> is rather<\/span> ill-defined, and for<\/span> this<\/span> reason<\/span> we shall<\/span> not comment<\/span> on it.<\/span><\/p>\n
We wish to put forward a<\/span> radically<\/span> different structure<\/span> for the salt of<\/span> deoxyribose<\/span> nucleic acid.<\/span> This<\/span> structure<\/span> has two<\/span> helical<\/span> chains<\/span> each<\/span> coiled<\/span> round the<\/span> same<\/span> axis<\/span> (see<\/span> diagram).<\/span> We have made the<\/span> usual<\/span> chemical<\/span> assumptions,<\/span> namely, that each<\/span> chain consists<\/span> of<\/span> phosphate<\/span> diester groups joining<\/span> beta-D-deoxyribofuranose<\/span> residues<\/span> with<\/span> 3\u2032,5\u2032 linkages. The two<\/span> chains<\/span> (but<\/span> not<\/span> their<\/span> bases)<\/span> are related by a<\/span> dyad<\/span> perpendicular<\/span> to the<\/span> fibre<\/span> axis.<\/span> Both<\/span> chains<\/span> follow<\/span> right<\/span>-handed<\/span> helices,<\/span> but<\/span> owing to the<\/span> dyad<\/span> the<\/span> sequences<\/span> of the<\/span> atoms<\/span> in the two<\/span> chains<\/span> run in<\/span> opposite directions.<\/span> Each<\/span> chain<\/span> loosely<\/span> resembles<\/span> Furberg\u2019s2 model<\/span> No.<\/span> 1; that is, the<\/span> bases<\/span> are on the inside of the<\/span> helix<\/span> and the<\/span> phosphates<\/span> on the outside. The<\/span> configuration<\/span> of the<\/span> sugar<\/span> and the<\/span> atoms<\/span> near it is<\/span> close<\/span> to<\/span> Furberg\u2019s \u201cstandard<\/span> configuration,\u201d<\/span> the<\/span> sugar<\/span> being roughly<\/span> perpendicular<\/span> to the<\/span> attached base.<\/span> There is a<\/span> residue<\/span> on each every<\/span> 3.4 A. in the<\/span> z-direction. We have<\/span> assumed<\/span> an angle of<\/span> 36\u00b0 between<\/span> adjacent<\/span> residues<\/span> in the<\/span> same<\/span> chain,<\/span> so that the<\/span> structure repeats<\/span> after<\/span> 10 residues<\/span> on each<\/span> chain,<\/span> that is, after<\/span> 34 A. The<\/span> distance<\/span> of a<\/span> phosphorus<\/span> atom<\/span> from the<\/span> fibre<\/span> axis<\/span> is<\/span> 10 A. As the<\/span> phosphates<\/span> are on the outside, cations have<\/span> easy access<\/span> to<\/span> them.<\/span><\/p>\n

The<\/span> vertical line<\/span> marks the<\/span> fibre<\/span> axis.<\/span><\/p>\n
The<\/span> structure<\/span> is an open one, and its water<\/span> content<\/span> is rather high. At<\/span> lower<\/span> water<\/span> contents<\/span> we would<\/span> expect<\/span> the<\/span> bases<\/span> to tilt so that the<\/span> structure<\/span> could become more<\/span> compact.<\/span><\/p>\n
The<\/span> novel feature<\/span> of the<\/span> structure<\/span> is the<\/span> manner<\/span> in which the two<\/span> chains<\/span> are held together by the<\/span> purine and<\/span> pyrimidine<\/span> bases.<\/span> The<\/span> planes<\/span> of the<\/span> bases<\/span> are<\/span> perpendicular<\/span> to the<\/span> fibre<\/span> axis.<\/span> They<\/span> are<\/span> joined<\/span> together in<\/span> pairs,<\/span> a<\/span> single base<\/span> from one<\/span> chain<\/span> being<\/span> hydroden-bonded<\/span> to a<\/span> single base<\/span> from the other<\/span> chain,<\/span> so that the two lie side by side with<\/span> identical<\/span> z-coordinates. One of the<\/span> pair<\/span> must be a<\/span> purine and the other a<\/span> pyrimidine<\/span> for bonding to<\/span> occur.<\/span> The<\/span> hydrogen<\/span> bonds are made as follows:<\/span> purine position<\/span> 1 to<\/span> pyrimidine<\/span> position<\/span> 1; purine position<\/span> 6 to<\/span> pyrimidine<\/span> position<\/span> 6.<\/p>\n
If it is<\/span> assumed<\/span> that the<\/span> bases<\/span> only<\/span> occur<\/span> in the<\/span> structure<\/span> in the most<\/span> plausible<\/span> tautomeric<\/span> forms<\/span> (that is, with the<\/span> keto rather than the<\/span> enol configurations)<\/span> it is<\/span> found<\/span> that only<\/span> specific pairs<\/span> of<\/span> bases can<\/span> bond together. These<\/span> pairs<\/span> are:<\/span> adenine (purine) with<\/span> thymine<\/span> (pyrimidine),<\/span> and<\/span> guanine (purine) with<\/span> cytosine<\/span> (pyrimidine).<\/span><\/p>\n
In other words, if an<\/span> adenine forms<\/span> one<\/span> member<\/span> of a<\/span> pair,<\/span> on either<\/span> chain,<\/span> then on these<\/span> assumptions<\/span> the other<\/span> member<\/span> must be<\/span> thymine;<\/span> similarly<\/span> for<\/span> guanine and<\/span> cytosine.<\/span> The<\/span> sequence<\/span> of<\/span> bases<\/span> on a<\/span> single chain<\/span> does<\/span> not appear<\/span> to be<\/span> restricted<\/span> in any way. However, if only<\/span> specific pairs<\/span> of<\/span> bases can<\/span> be<\/span> formed,<\/span> it follows that if the<\/span> sequence<\/span> of<\/span> bases<\/span> on one<\/span> chain<\/span> is<\/span> given,<\/span> then the<\/span> sequence<\/span> on the other<\/span> chain<\/span> is<\/span> automatically<\/span> determined.<\/span><\/p>\n
It has been<\/span> found experimentally3,4<\/span> that the<\/span> ratio<\/span> of the<\/span> amounts<\/span> of<\/span> adenine to<\/span> thymine,<\/span> and the<\/span> ratio<\/span> of<\/span> guanine to<\/span> cytosine,<\/span> are always<\/span> very close<\/span> to<\/span> unity<\/span> for<\/span> deoxyribose<\/span> nucleic acid.<\/span><\/p>\n
It is<\/span> probably impossible<\/span> to build<\/span> this<\/span> structure<\/span> with a<\/span> ribose sugar<\/span> in<\/span> place<\/span> of the<\/span> deoxyribose,<\/span> as the<\/span> extra<\/span> oxygen<\/span> atom<\/span> would make too<\/span> close<\/span> a van<\/span> der<\/span> Waals contact.<\/span><\/p>\n
The<\/span> previously<\/span> published<\/span> X-ray data5,6<\/span> on<\/span> deoxyribose<\/span> nucleic acid<\/span> are<\/span> insufficient<\/span> for a<\/span> rigorous test<\/span> of our<\/span> structure.<\/span> So far as we<\/span> can<\/span> tell, it is roughly<\/span> compatible<\/span> with the<\/span> experimental<\/span> data,<\/span> but it must be<\/span> regarded<\/span> as<\/span> unproved<\/span> until<\/span> it has been<\/span> checked<\/span> against more<\/span> exact results.<\/span> Some of these are<\/span> given<\/span> in the following<\/span> communications.<\/span> We were<\/span> not<\/span> aware of the<\/span> details<\/span> of the<\/span> results<\/span> presented<\/span> there when we<\/span> devised<\/span> our<\/span> structure,<\/span> which<\/span> rests mainly<\/span> though<\/span> not entirely<\/span> on<\/span> published experimental<\/span> data<\/span> and<\/span> stereochemical<\/span> arguments.<\/span><\/p>\n
It has<\/span> not escaped<\/span> our<\/span> notice<\/span> that the<\/span> specific<\/span> pai<\/span>ring<\/span> we have<\/span> postulated immediately<\/span> suggests<\/span> a<\/span> possible copying<\/span> mechanism<\/span> for the<\/span> genetic<\/span> material.<\/span><\/p>\n
Full<\/span> details<\/span> of the<\/span> structure,<\/span> including<\/span> the<\/span> conditions assumed<\/span> in building it, together with a<\/span> set<\/span> of<\/span> coordinates<\/span> for the<\/span> atoms,<\/span> will be<\/span> published<\/span> elsewhere.<\/span><\/p>\n
