Elegaic and gorgeous.  But… but…

BUT WHY DO THEY TURN INTO TREES AT THE END?  Why?  Is this a Woods of the Suicides sort of thing?  Are we mixing our Greek Mythology with our Dante?  Somebody please explain to me.
