I love how Greed’s name is pronounced “Gleedah” in the Fullmetal Alchemist anime. It doesn’t matter to me that Western terms in the voices of the characters don’t come out quite the way we Westerners would say them, or that the writers of the show seem to think that Roy Mustang is a name that somebody would actually have. Gleedah is badass. Gleedah’s badassery is so badass that he can sound like he should be Glinda’s little sister and still be cool. That’s talent.

Confederacy Update
Started the final revision of Confederacy today. That should take me a couple of weeks, then I can start recording podcast episodes. Its ETA is still September.
Good Point
I would never have thought about this fact about electronics, though it seems obvious after the fact. How many sci-fi writers have made this blunder about their robot characters?
Though technically Helix doesn’t need air to survive, he just needs it to function. I’m sure he’s got some sort of thing that makes him shut down if his chips overheat. Then they’d cool (albeit a lot more slowly than normal) via radiant energy.

Why I Love the Scarecrow and the Tin Woodman
Though the other books in the series were childhood favorites of mine, somehow I’d never managed to read The Wizard of Oz, the one that started it all. Recently I got to read it for a class on the history of fairy tales and it was a delight.
As a kid, the characters of the Tin Woodman and the Scarecrow were my favorites. They still are. It was fascinating to me the way they were kind of alive and kind of not. They have special strengths and weaknesses – the Scarecrow can be disassembled and reassembled without being hurt, but he can’t handle fire. But the most deeply reassuring thing to my 7-year-old mind was that all the other characters were okay with that. I used to feel different from all the other kids on the playground, and here were these characters who were so different they weren’t even human, and still they were accepted as equals. I needed that.
L. Frank Baum, thank you for the wonderful childhood memories.
Yellow Cake and Beefless Stroganoff
Just a couple of new culinary experiments. Four-egg yellow cake is from Allrecipes.com with pretty much no modification. I tried sprinkling M&Ms on top 10 minutes into the baking time, but they still sank to the bottom. They still tasted good, though. The cake has an excellent texture, bland, but you want that in a cake.
Beefless stroganoff I made up.
Beefless Stroganoff
- Whole-wheat pasta
- 1 can pinto beans
- 1 can navy beans
- 1 large onion
- Plenty of garlic
- Dash of half & half
- Dash of white wine
Chop the onion so the slices are going to be in long strips. Sauté that with the garlic in butter until caramelized. While it’s going, boil pasta. Stir beans into onion mixture, then cooked pasta, then salt & pepper. Add half & half until texture is the way you like it, then add white wine to taste.
